Car Camping Ventilation & Safety Guide

Fan installation, CO detector placement, and proper air circulation for safe, comfortable sleeping in any vehicle.

    1

Carbon monoxide rule #1: Never run your engine while sleeping unless you have a CO detector rated for confined spaces AND windows cracked for ventilation. This is non-negotiable.

    2

Install a MaxxAir Fan or Maxx Fan in a rear window for active ventilation. Use the window clamp mount (no roof cutting required). Position intake low, exhaust high for best air circulation.

    3

Place a CO and CO2 detector at sleeping level — not up high (gases are heavy and accumulate at breathing height first). Kidde KN-COB-DP2 is our field-tested pick at $35.

    4

For passive ventilation: use mosquito net window covers on cracked windows. Cracking opposing windows 1–2" creates cross-ventilation without a power draw.

    5

In hot weather, a 12V fan pointing at you draws far less power than AC and dramatically improves sleeping temperature. O2COOL 10" battery fan is our budget pick; Caframo Bora 12V is the best overall.
