Stealth Urban Car Camping Setup
An invisible-from-outside, maximally comfortable car camping setup for city parking, stealth camping, and van life adjacent living.
The stealth principle: your vehicle should look completely unoccupied from outside at night. This means total window blackout, no visible gear silhouettes, no lights leaking through covers.
Full window blackout is mandatory. Reflectix cut-to-fit works for daytime stealth (reflective side out looks like sunshade). For nighttime, add a black fleece layer on top of Reflectix — zero light leakage.
Inside lighting: use red-spectrum LED strip lights on a dimmer. Red light is less visible through covers and preserves night vision. Place strips along the platform edge facing down, not up.
Minimize outside indicators: remove roof cargo boxes when urban camping. Avoid parking near cameras. Choose residential streets, not commercial areas. Never park in the same spot two nights in a row.
Have a cover story ready: tell anyone who asks you're waiting for a friend, had too much to drive, taking a quick rest. Keep front seat area appearing normal — jacket on seat, maps visible, normal car interior.
